IEE Sheffield Centre History 1930-1939

1930/31
Sub-Centre chairman William Ernest Burnand, Proprietor of W E Burnand Electrical Equipment Manufactures and Repairers. William started the annual gift of a basket of fruit to be raffled at the Annual Dinner Dance. Rowland Walker, who at the time worked for Mr Burnand, continued the tradition for many years.

William Ernest Burnand William Burnand, a very active supporter of the IEE, was chairman of the North Midland Centre in the 1921/22 session (the session after the formation of the Sheffield Sub-Centre). William served on the Sheffield Sub-Centre for 31 years over a period of 33 years, 19 years as Honorary Treasurer.

The subject of William's chairman's address to the North Midland Centre on the 15th November 1921 expanded on the relationships between labour unrest following the first World War and economics. William's chairman's address to the Sheffield Sub-Centre on the 15th October was titled "The supreme importance of Little Things".

15th October, 66th Sub-Centre committee meeting held at the Royal Victoria Hotel. It was proposed by W E Burnand and seconded by D G Jones to hold a Golf Tournament. This was agreed and the arrangements were left with messrs: E H Furnival, I S Mackenzie and E Morgan.

15th April, 70th Sub-Centre meeting. It was agreed to give an Honorarium of £2-0-0d to the Hon Secretary's typist for work done on behalf of the Sub-Centre. The Summer outing was held over two days (July 5th & 6th) at Buxton.

1931/32
Sub-Centre chairman I Scott Mackenzie, Director and Chief Electrical Engineer of The Staveley Coal & Iron Co.

Mr. Mackenzie received his technical education at the Central Technical College, South Kensington, London, and served his apprenticeship at the Earl of Dudley's Round Oak Iron and Steel Works and Collieries in South Staffordshire.

After this, he went out to India, where he served first of all as an Inspector in the Public Works Department, and subsequently as Engineer to The Madras Electric Supply Corporation, Ltd.

On his return to this country, at the end of 1918, he joined the Staff of The Newcastle-on-Tyne Electric Supply Company, Ltd., under Messrs. Merz and McLellan, and took over the appointment of Chief Electrical Engineer to The Staveley Coal and Iron Company, Ltd., on 1st January, 1922.

18th November, the first reference in any Sub-Centre minutes to the Faraday lecture which was inaugurated in 1924. An account for £2-14-8d for Faraday booklets sent to various schools was passed for payment. It was to be another fourteen years until the first Faraday lecture was given in Sheffield.

1932/33
19th April, 80th Sub-Centre committee meeting, chairman Leonard Holdsworth Crowther. A sum of £10-0-0d for a typewriter for use by the Sub-Centre was agreed. It was also agreed to give an Honorarium of £2-0-0d to the Hon Secretary's typist.

1933/34
Ernest Morgan Sub-Centre chairman Ernest Morgan, General Manager of the Electric Supply Department, Sheffield Corporation.

18th April, 84th Sub-Centre committee meeting, A donation of £25 to the Benevolent Institution from the Dinner Dance was agreed. This appears to be the first donation to the Benevolent Fund.

1934/35
Sub-Centre chairman D H Davies, Borough Electrical Engineer, Corporation Electricity Dept. Chesterfield.

17th October, 85th Sub-Centre committee meeting held at the Royal Victoria Hotel, It was agreed to give a donation of £5 to the Sheffield Telegraph Children's Outing Fund.

1935/36
Sub-Centre chairman Fred Gilberthorpe, Chief Electrical Engineer (subsequently Chief Engineer) Kaiser Ellison Ltd, Steelmakers & Forgemasters.

1936/37
18th November, 94th Sub-Centre committee meeting, Chairman A R Chaytor. A joint meeting with the IMechE was agreed. Costs would be shared with the IMechE funding the room and lantern and the Sub-Centre funding the lecturer's expenses.

R G Ward appointed as the first Honorary Treasurer, it is assumed that the Honorary Secretary had previously undertaken these duties. A C Bostel appointed as Honorary Secretary for the next seven years.

21st April, 97th Sub-Centre committee meeting. A sum of £30 was allocated to the student section for the 36/37 session. This appears to be the first such allocation.

1937/38
Sub-Centre chairman William Fordham C. Cooper, H.M. Electrical Inspector of Factories, Sheffield.

4th May, 101st Sub-Centre committee meeting, A donation of £21 to the Benevolent Fund from the Dinner Dance was approved.

W E Burnand appointed the second Honorary Treasurer. He was to serve in this post for the next 18 years.

1938/39
15th December, Chairman Hubert W Kefford. The 104th Sub-Centre Committee meeting was the last to record the sequential meeting number. There is no mention in the minutes as to why the practice was so abruptly stopped.

1939/40
Sub-Centre chairman Felix S Naylor, Chief Electrical Engineer Thomas Firth & John Brown Ltd.

22nd September, An Emergency Meeting was held at the Royal Victoria Hotel. This meeting agreed to follow a Head Office proposal and curtail activities until the end of the year.

18th December, Meeting at the King's Head Hotel agreed that from 1st January 1940 a normal programme of events would be resumed.

F S Naylor joined Thomas Firth and John Brown Ltd as Chief Electrical Engineer to develop their high voltage distribution system. Their private generation had stopped in 1932 and he worked on the replacement of their 3.3kV 2 phase and 3 phase systems with a 6.6kV system ready for the war. He later moved to the supply authorities at Watford and Gravesend.
