IEE Sheffield Centre History 1960-1969

1960/61
Ernest James Lilleker (in 1944!) Sub-Centre chairman Ernest James Lilleker, Director, Lilleker Bros Electrical Contractors, Rotherham. Ernest was also to serve as Centre chairman in the 1988/89 session.

C B Simpson appointed as Honorary Secretary and served for the next two years.

1961/62
Gerald L Mason G.L. Mason was Sub-Centre chairman for the session. Gerald Mason was Area Operation and Maintenance Engineer for the Sheffield Sub-Area of the Y.E.B.

Diamond Jubilee of North Midland Centre celebrated by weekend at Scarborough, St Nicholas Hotel with visit of  I.E.E. President C.T. Melling.

1962/63
Jack W. Spooner Sub-Centre chairman J W Spooner. Jack was Area Engineer for Sheffield Post Office Telephones.

Committee meetings moved from the Grand Hotel to Sheffield University, Mappin Street. No reason is given in the minutes as to why the change of venue was made. Annual summer visit to Ladybower Dams.

1963/64
Prof. Alexander Lamb Cullen Sub-Centre chairman Professor Alexander Lamb Cullen, Electrical Engineering Department, University of Sheffield. L E Jones starts a four year session as Honorary Secretary.

Ernest J. Lilleker Ernest Lilleker takes over as Honorary Treasurer and starts a continuous period of twenty four years in the appointment.

15th October, first meeting of the North Midland Centre, Electronics Section. Chairman Dr Frank A Benson (Sheffield University). Meeting held at Catterick district. Name changed about two years latter to Electronics and Control Section.

1964/65
John Eric Caldwell John Eric Caldwell circa 1985
John Eric Caldwell was Sub-Centre chairman for the session. John served in the Air Branch of the Royal Navy during the war and later obtained an Honours Degree at the University of Nottingham. He joined the East Midlands Electricity Board as an Assistant Engineer in 1949, where he was concerned with substation construction. He later joined the Sheffield Area of the Yorkshire Electricity Board and was Senior assistant Engineer, Meters Test and Protection. He became Senior assistant Engineer Distribution Design, Sheffield Area and Area Engineer, Grimsby in 1965. He re-joined EMEB as Assistant Chief Engineer (Technical) in 1967 and became Management Services Officer of that board in 1970. In 1973 he became Group Engineer, Southern Group, East Midlands Electricity Board.

1965/66
Ken V A Lilley K V A Lilley was Sub-Centre chairman for the session. Ken Lilley was Senior Assistant Engineer and Distribution Design, Sheffield Area Y.E.B. and became Area Engineer and Manager, Grimsby Area Y.E.B. He was a staunch supporter of the IEE and was killed in a car accident when travelling to the scene of a fault during high winds.

1966/67
Len Bunce Sub-Centre chairman Leonard Cecil Bunce, Chief Electrical Engineer at Samuel Fox & Co, Stocksbridge. Len's chairmans address was "Sixty years of electricity in a large steelworks" and as the title suggests his career spanned tremendous changes in steel production technology. Len was heavily involved in the transition from open hearth steelmaking to 100% electric arc melting. He was also involved in the conversion of the Stocksbridge billet mill from steam engine drive to electric motors. After his retirement from full-time employment in 1975 Len served as a Technical Consultant for Lilleker Brothers at Rotherham.

1967/68
Norman Llewellyn Norman Llewellyn
Sub-Centre chairman Norman Llewellyn, Station superintendent at Thorpe Marsh Power Station. H C Mortimer Honourary Secretary for the next three years.

1968/69
Dr John Allison Sub-Centre chairman Dr John Allison, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, University of Sheffield.

7th February, Sub-Centre committee meeting held at Thorpe Marsh Power Station. Following the meeting a visit was made around the Power Station.

In July the Sub-Centre hosted the IEE Summer Meeting when the President and Council members and their wives spent six days in Sheffield. Members attending the Summer meeting were presented with a silver spoon inscribed I.E.E. Industrial visits were arranged in the daytime, while wives visited Chatsworth, Haddon Hall and other places of interest. Part of the visit was a technical trip around the new Tinsley Park works of British Steel. Hosted by J B (Jack) Machin who was works Director, a guide on the trip was a young Ken Hardwick (1993/94 chairman). The evening programme included:-

Monday - Civic Reception in marque on Western Park
Tuesday - Supper Dance at Sheffield University
Thursday - Dinner at the Cutlers' Hall
Friday - Supper Dance at British Steel's Phoenix Rooms

At this time the committee meeting prior to the A.G.M. was held in the afternoon and attended by a representative from Savoy Place who also addressed the committee and the A.G.M. There was also a committee dinner after the A.G.M. attended by the Savoy Place representative.

1969/70
Ken G W Bolton Ken Bolton was Sub-Centre chairman for the session. Ken was Senior Assistant Engineer, Meters Test and Protection, Sheffield Sub-Area of the Y.E.B. He later became assistant Chief Engineer Meters and Telecommunications E.E.B. Engineering Manager Five Rivers Area, East Anglian Group E.E.B. Assistant Chief Engineer Technical, Y.E.B. and Technical Manager Y.E.
