IEE Sheffield Centre History 1980-1989
1980/81
Centre chairman W.H. Sutton. Harry Sutton was Area Manager for the Sheffield Area of the Y.E.B. His chairmans address was entitled "People, Events and Progress".
D Spinks commenced a four year term as Hon. Secretary. The Faraday lecture was presented by British Petroleum at the City Hall on 14th January. There were 236 active members in the Centre during the session.
The Graduate and Student Section became the Younger Members Committee 50 Years after its formation on 15th December 1921. Ann Walton become the Centre's first female Younger Members chairman. Ann was also elected to represent Younger Members on the Council of the IEE between 1981 and 1984. Ann was employed by British Steel at Swindon Laboratories, Rotherham. She worked on automatic control aspects of steelplant.
28th September the first Annual Centre Golf Tournament was held at Sickleholme Golf Club. Organised by Harry Sutton and Ernest Lilleker, who donated the Sutton/Lilleker trophy for the annual competition. Terry Fenwick donated the Fenwick putter which is still keenly competed for. The event raised £255 for the Benevolent Fund.
1981/82
Centre chairman Dennis Abraham, Head of Electrical Engineering Dept, Sheffield Polytechnic. The second Annual Dinner was held on 19th November at the Grosvenor House Hotel. The Faraday lecture at the City Hall on 13th January, presented by British Rail, was titled "Railways Have an Electric Future". The Annual Dinner Dance was held at the Royal Victoria Hotel and cost £9.75 per person. There were 252 active members in the Centre during the session. Dennis died at the age of 75 in December 1998.
1982/83
Centre chairman Dennis Porter, Deputy Regional Engineer, Trent Regional Health Authority. Dennis choose the subject "Electrical Engineering and the N.H.S" for his chairman's address which was held at Telephone house. The third Annual Dinner was held at the Grosvenor House Hotel on 18 November, the cost being £9.75 per person. The Faraday lecture at the City Hall on 26th January was presented by Standard Telephones and Cables. There were 206 active members in the Centre during the session.
The Ladies Evening lecture was renamed the John F. Freeman Memorial Lecture following the death of John Freeman in 1980. John was always very keen to involve members partners in IEE events and the renamed Ladies Evening Lecture was considered fitting memorial. The subject of the first lecture was "Electricity in the Body - Dennis Porter Friend or Foe" presented by Dr A.T. Barker (Sheffield University).
The Silver Jubilee of the formation of the North Lincolnshire District was celebrated by a summer visit to London by members and their partners. Savoy Place was specifically opened on the Sunday morning of the visit, which was followed by a visit to the Thames Barrier.
1983/84
Centre chairman was Jack Gill Burrell, District Manager CEGB. The Faraday lecture at the City Hall on 15th February, presented by British Aerospace, was titled "Lets Build a Satellite". There were 175 active members in the Centre during the session. The John Freeman Memorial lecture was titled "Nuclear Power".
Name of the North Midland Centre changed to the Yorkshire Centre.
1984/85
Centre Chairman George William Gray, Retired (formally Chief Electrical Engineer, No 3 Area NCB) George's chairman's address held at Telephone house was titled "Electricity in Mining - Past, Present and Future".
George initiated and developed many new ideas which are now standard practice in the mining industry. He was the pioneer of 1100V at the coalface, the first installation being at Shireoakes Colliery in 1964. He pioneered the use of the modern conducting rubber trailing cable and conducting rubber drill cables. His innovative thinking led to the development of the lightweight
Intrinsically Safe test instrument currently in use in mines.
Dennis Abraham commences a three year term as Honorary Secretary. There was no Faraday lecture in the Sheffield Centre during the session. The John Freeman Memorial lecture was "Recent Explorations of the Planets". There were 135 active members in the Centre during the session.
1985/86
Centre chairman Ken Holling, Retired (formally Head of Electrical & Electronic Department, Chesterfield Technical College). Faraday lecture held at the City Hall on 13th November was presented by British Telecom. The Annual Dinner held on 21st November moved from the Grosvenor to the Royal Victoria Hotel. The John Freeman Memorial lecture was "The Gospel According to St. Michael" presented by Mr M Burr, General Manager of M & S Sheffield. There were 113 active members in the Centre during the session.
Exhibition at Sheffield Show on 18-20th July to celebrate 100 years of Electricity in Sheffield in conjunction with YEB and Sheffield Corporation. A Centenary booklet was produced. The event was organised by Tom Holmes.
1986/87
Centre chairman Alan Williams, Chief Electrical Engineer, Trent Regional Hospital Board. Alan's chairmans address held at the Royal Victoria Hotel was titled "Is Engineering Good for your Health". Faraday lecture held at the City Hall on 21st January was presented by I.C.L. The John Freeman Memorial lecture was "3D Imaging in Art". There were 91 active members in the Centre during the session.
1987/88
Centre chairman Tom Holmes, District Engineer, YEB Sheffield North
District. Tom's chairmans address was titled "Managing the Network". Ken Hardwick commenced a five year term as Hon. Secretary and George Gray commenced a six year term as Hon. Treasurer. New larger size programme booklet replaces smaller white version.
Faraday Lecture in January held in the Octagon centre over two days for the first time. The subject was "The Intelligent Car" was presented by the Ford Motor company. The venue was changed to enable a car to be driven onto the stage. On the second evening performance the drive motor to the car bogie blew a fuse and the car was pushed onto the stage!
First Prestige Lecture and Exhibition arranged at the Sheffield Octagon Centre. The lecture topic was "Electrical Tom Holmes Engineering in Medicine" presented by Dr Ian Freeston.
The John Freeman Memorial lecture was "Crown Derby Pottery". There were 122 active members in the Centre during the session. Rowland Walker the first IEE member to become Master Cutler. Centre Chairman Tom Holmes attended the 352nd Cutler's Feast as his guest.
31st May, Management & Design Board visit Sheffield. Entertained at the Cutler's Hall by Rowland Walker, Master Cutler.
National IEE/IERE merger, Sheffield Centre merged with the IERE Yorkshire Centre (see appendix 6 for brief IERE history details). Locally IEE/IERE merger celebrated by a Grand Garden Party on 7th July at Bramham Park Stately House. This joint event with the IEE Yorkshire Centre included performances by the Oughtibridge Brass Band and the City of York Pipe Band.
1988/89
Centre chairman Ernest Lilleker, Retired (formally Director of Lilleker Brothers, Rotherham). Ernest had served on the committee since 1962 and was proposed as Centre chairman in recognition of his long and valued service to the Sheffield Centre. Ernest's chairman's address was titled "The Electrical Contracting Industry".
The second Prestige Lecture held at the Sheffield Octagon Centre on 22nd February. The lecture "Engineers in Management" was presented by Sir Robert Scholey, CBE Chairman of British Steel Corporation).
The Faraday lecture at the City Hall on 1st March, presented by the B.B.C. was entitled "Sound and Vision". This was the Faraday at which 'Super Heroes' in the form of the local Centre Chairman were allowed to practice their flying skills. Accordingly, to the delight of those present, Ernest once more took to the skies above Sheffield in an amazing display of skill and daring!
The John Freeman Memorial lecture was "Antiques". There were 142 active members in the Centre during the session.
1989/90
Centre chairman John Reid, Director Jubilee Electronics. John was the
first ex IERE member to serve as Centre chairman following the merger in 1987. John had previously been chairman of the Yorkshire Section of the IERE in 1984. John's chairmans address was titled "Industrial Electronics: Past, Present and Future". The Faraday lecture at the City Hall on 28th Feb, presented by the Bank of Scotland, was titled "Electric Currency".
The third Prestige Lecture and exhibition at the Sheffield Octagon Centre, presented by J Randle (Jaguar Cars), was titled " Electronics in High Performance Motor Cars". The lecture was attended by 900 people.
National IEE/IMfgE merger, Sheffield Centre merged with the IMfgE South Yorkshire Area.
The John Freeman Memorial lecture was "An Illustrated Tour of the Far East". There were 113 active members in the Centre during the session.
