The lecture will present an overview of technological developments in the area of computing and control in order to provide an appraisal of their influence on Railway systems of the future. Although the title uses the word ‘advanced’ the main focus of the lecture will be towards railway applications, which can be considered to be ‘intelligent’
The concept of intelligence will be discussed initially, principally to derive an engineering definition, and then a number of intelligent computing techniques will be explained in an understandable and informative manner. The possible applicability of these will be illustrated by a variety of examples drawn from current and emerging railway practice, and finally there will be comments regarding where this might lead in the long term.
