Children's Christmas Science Lecture

The Bubble Show

Date: Monday 18th November 2000
Location: Sheffield Hallam University - The Pennine Lecture Theatre
Time: 18:30
Type: O (See Key on main Events page)

Arranged by the Centre for Science Education
(Sponsored by the South Yorkshire Branch of the IEE)

That boring old mixture of detergent and water you use for washing-up has some amazing properties.   It forms these very thin but strong films.   Trap a gas inside and you make a bubble.   We will investigate the strength and colours of soap films and make some weird bubbles that float, bubbles that are 'heavy' and bubbles that grow and shrink on their own.   We might even make a bubble where the soap film gets so thin that you cannot see it!   By introducing bit of chemistry we will make bubbles that burn and maybe even bubbles that explode!

To complete the show we will use the gases in the exploding bubble to fire the Potato Cannon: the modern way to make chips!

The lecture is suitable for children 7+ and their parents.   With any luck, we will have a brass band playing Christmas carols which might even attract Father Christmas!!

Admission by 'free' tickets available via the Centre for Science Education.   Telephone 0114 225 4870 (Contacts: Richard Walton or Anne Dains)
