Annual Report - 1998/99 Session

General

Good progress was made during the session on the three year '10 Point Action Plan' that was formulated at the March 1998 Centre Congress in Birmingham. Already five point of the plan have been completed.

Centre Committee Meetings

There were nine Committee Meetings during the session plus a large number of sub-committee meetings. The average attendance was 15 (total committee membership 21), 70% of the maximum possible attendance.

Ordinary General Meetings

Fourteen Sheffield and seven North Lincs based lecture meetings were held during the session. The average attendance for the lectures was 37, a slight decrease on the previous session. (See table below)

Joint Meetings

 Joint meetings were held during the session with the following professional Institutions IQA (1), InstMC (2), CIBSE (2), IMechE (1) and the GIES (1).

Golf Tournament

 The Annual Golf Tournament was held on Friday 9 September at Rotherham Golf Club. Some 68 players took part, a small increase on the previous year, which ensured that a small profit was made on the event. A good day and meal was enjoyed by all and a total of £401 was raised by the after the Dinner raffle in aid of the Benevolent Fund.

Annual Dinner

 The Annual Dinner, held at the Holiday Inn on Friday 16 October, was attended by 83 a reduction of 15 on the 1997 figures. The Centre Committee are to review the future viability of this social event.

North Lincs Annual Dinner Dance

 The North Lincs Annual Dinner Dance held on 30 October at the Royal Hotel, Scunthorpe was attended by 155 people a slight decrease on the previous year.

EMC Colloquium

 The one day EMC Colloquium organised in conjunction with Professional Group E2, held on the 25 November, was attended by some 40 members. This was a new venture for the Centre and future events are being considered.

Family Christmas Lecture

The Centre again co-sponsored the annual Sheffield Hallam University Family Christmas lecture, which attracted an audience of some 500 children over three sessions on the 15 December.

Annual Dinner Dance

The Annual Dinner Dance held at the Holiday Inn 16 April was attended by 179, a significant increase of 67 on the previous year. The addition of a Piano Quartet to the Dance Band was considered a great success and will be repeated again next year. The total amount raised by the raffle for the Benevolent fund was a magnificent £1,114.

SET 99 Quiz

On Tuesday 16 March the Centre hosted its third Science Engineering and Technology Week quiz. A total of 19 teams competed for the three cash prizes and with careful judgment the committee team again managed to miss out on a prize!

SET 99 - Younger Member Papers Evening

This event held on the 17 March was again a joint event with the IMechE. A total of 8 papers were presented and the judges again had a difficult time selecting the eventual prize winners.
