Annual Report - 1999/2000 Session

General

Most of the last session has been devoted to discussion and consultations over the Centres Strategy Working Party (CSWP) proposals to restructure the existing Centre organisation into Branches with Regional Forum focus.   Progress has continued to be made in the following areas.

Centre Committee Meetings

There were eight Committee Meetings during the session plus a large number of sub-committee meetings.   The average attendance was 13 (total committee membership 21), 62% of the maximum possible attendance.

Ordinary General Meetings

Fourteen Sheffield and seven North Lincs based lecture meetings were held during the session.   The average attendance for the lectures was 48, a significant increase on the previous session, but this was largely due to the success of the International Lecture.   (See table below)

Joint Meetings

Joint meetings were held during the session with the following professional Institutions:

The Institute of Quality Assurance {IQA (1)}, The Institute of Measurement and Control {InstMC (2)}, The Chartered Institute of Building Services {CIBSE (2)}, The Institution of Mechanical Engineers {IMechE (2)} and the Grimsby Institute of Engineers and Shipbuilding {GIES (1)}.

Review of Major Events

Golf Tournament

The Annual Golf Tournament was held on Friday 10th September at Rotherham Golf Club.   Some 74 players took part, an increase of 6 on the previous year, which ensured that a small profit was made on the event.   A good day and meal was enjoyed by all and an excellent total of £454 was raised by the after Dinner raffle in aid of the Benevolent Fund although problems were again experienced with obtaining suitable raffle donations.

Chairman's Address

An interesting lecture on "everyday use of electricity" drawing comparisons with the third world was very well attended and received.   The Benevolent fund collection at the Chairman's address in Sheffield on the 6th October raised a total of £106.

Annual Dinner

81 attended the Annual Dinner held at the Holiday Inn on Friday 22nd October, a slight decrease on the previous year.   A review the future viability of this social event is to be undertaken.

North Lincs Annual Dinner Dance

The North Lincs Annual Dinner Dance held on 29th October at the Royal Hotel, Scunthorpe was attended by 195 people an increase of 40 on the previous year.   The total amount raised by the raffle for the Benevolent fund was a magnificent £765.

SPT Lecture

The arranged SPT lecture was cancelled at very short notice and emergency plans were required to notify members at the last moment.   Our strong views have been passed to the lecture organisers.

Family Christmas Lecture

The Centre again co-sponsored the annual Sheffield Hallam University Family Christmas lecture, which attracted an audience of some 800 children over two sessions on the 15th December.

International Lecture

The IEE International Lecture - "Electric Vehicles" was held in Sheffield on the 14th February and was attended by an excellent audience of 340 at St.   George's Church on Mappin Street

National Science Week 2000 Quiz

On Tuesday 21st March the Centre hosted its fourth National Science week quiz.   A total of 11 teams competed for the three cash prizes and with careful judgement, the committee team, yet again managed to miss out on a prize!

National Science Week 2000 - Younger Member Papers Evening

Unfortunately due to lack of papers this event due to be held on Wednesday 22nd March was cancelled.

Annual Dinner Dance

171 attended the Annual Dinner Dance held at the Holiday Inn on The 7th April, a slight reduction of 8 on the previous year.   The addition of a Piano Quartet to the Dance Band was again considered a great success.   The total amount raised by the raffle for the Benevolent fund was a magnificent £1,010.

North Lincs - Sub Centre AGM/Chairman's Address

The Benevolent fund collection at the Chairman's address in Scunthorpe on the 18th April raised a total of £43.
