The Yorkshire Section of the IERE came into existence at the instigation of Mr Peter A Bennett (IEE Sheffield Centre chairman 1992/93) who, although residing in Yorkshire, was a committee member of the IERE North Western Section.
Peter undertook to circulate all members of the Institution residing in the Yorkshire area with the proposal to start a Yorkshire Section. An inaugural meeting was held at Leeds University on Wednesday, 10th July, 1963 during which a committee was formed with Mr D. W. Hinde, Head of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Huddersfield College of Technology appointed as the first chairman and Mr P. A. Bennett appointed as the Secretary/Treasurer.
Several papers were presented during this first session including one with the IEE Yorkshire Centre which had an "Electronics Division" based in the main School of Signals in Catterick. These events took place ahead of the formal submission and approval of a petition to constitute the Yorkshire Section made to Council on the 16th June 1964. Council's approval to form the Yorkshire Section of the IERE was celebrated by a dinner, which was held at Cleckheaton on November 11th, 1994 at which the President of the Institution - J Langham Thompson and Mrs Thompson were the Guests of Honour.
Meetings were originally held in the Electrical Engineering Departments of Leeds University and those of the following Colleges of Technology: Bradford, Huddersfield, Halifax, Barnsley and Sheffield with the latter two-named being usually the worst attended. In 1972 Huddersfield College of Technology was discontinued as a meeting venue and, instead, meetings were held in the Zetland Hotel, Huddersfield until, in 1977, when they were concentrated on the following Hotels:- Leeds Windmill, Selby Fork and the Brotherton Fox.
The Yorkshire Section chairmen were initially selected for a period
