Arising from the dramatic upsurge and change in the requirements of manufacturing expertise for engineering supplies for the first world war, there arose a need for a body to represent these manufacturing engineers. The nearest existing body the IMechE or any other of the major institutions were not thought to be suitable. It was decided to form another, more suitable institution. Much thought went into the name to call the new institution. Manufacturing, Production etc. were proposed and it was thought that The Institution of Production Engineers would be the most appropriate. This new institution was formed nationally in 1921.
Some time in the early 1930's the Sheffield Section of the Institution of Production Engineers was formed. Because of it's manufacturing/production aspect most of the local important companies took an interest. The committee and main thrust of the membership was dominated by the Steel Barons, of the time. These were from companies such as, Osborn's, English Steel, Firth Vickers, Park Gate Iron & Steel, Hatfield's, Balfours, Jessop's, etc many of which are now no longer names to be seen.
A Royal Charter was granted for the Institution of Production Engineers in 1964. At this time the membership of the Sheffield Section was about 400 (all grades). Over the years Sheffield Section has had recognition for its contribution to the work of the Institution. In addition the profile and involvement of members in Sheffield industry and commerce has helped the profession tremendously. Many changes and aspects of members requirements have been referred to Council by the Sheffield committee, and these assisted in formulating many of the policies of the Institution.
Unfortunately as steel and manufacturing industry in Sheffield was hit by various recessions during the 1970's and 80's much of the membership base became eroded and in particular the top level voice of Sheffield's industry disappeared.
New members were encouraged to join by senior managers, this was very evident in the area of young people and students where Sheffield has recognition for the high intake of new student members by the Polytechnic (now Hallam University) and Sheffield University. New members were encouraged by the setting up of student prizes in local educational institutions. The Section Chairman's, Beatson and Clarke, J Ronnie Prior and Garnet prizes are some. A number also had investments to ensure their continuing availability.
The section continued to adapt to the changing environment and functioned very effectively to assist members locally up to and through into the merger in 1991 with the Institution of Electrical Engineers.
